Stargate Finance (STG) is the native token for Stargate, a protocol designed for cross-chain liquidity transfers, which is built upon the LayerZero infrastructure. Its primary function is to allow users to swap native assets between different blockchains in a single transaction, eliminating the need for wrapped or intermediate tokens. This approach helps to unify liquidity that is often siloed on separate networks. As a component within the decentralized finance (DeFi) and cross-chain categories, Stargate Finance provides a foundational layer for interoperability in the broader blockchain ecosystem.

How does Stargate Finance work?

Stargate Finance operates as an application on top of other blockchains, rather than having its own independent consensus mechanism. The protocol's cross-chain messaging is handled by the LayerZero network, which provides the transport layer for communication.

When a user initiates a cross-chain transfer, their assets are deposited into a Stargate pool on the source chain. A message is then sent via LayerZero to the destination chain to trigger the release of assets from the corresponding pool. This process allows for native asset swaps without the need for bridging or wrapping tokens, settling transactions on each respective chain.

The tokenomics of Stargate Finance (STG) are defined by a fixed maximum supply. The total amount of STG tokens that can ever be created is capped at 1,000,000,000. This fixed supply model means the token is not designed to be inflationary over the long term, as no new tokens can be minted beyond this limit. The circulating supply, which is the number of tokens currently available on the market, is a subset of this total supply. As of recent data, the circulating supply stands at 660,951,371 STG. The distribution of these tokens is allocated towards protocol incentives, development, and community initiatives.
