Wat is Optimism?

Optimism (OP) is the governance token for the Optimism network, a layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum. The project was launched in 2022 by its founders Jinglan Wang, Ben Jones, and Kevin Ho. The primary function of the OP token is to empower community governance over the protocol's future development and treasury. As a layer-2 solution, Optimism is designed to process transactions at a lower cost and higher speed than the Ethereum mainnet while still benefiting from its security. The token is integral to the Optimism Collective, a governance structure responsible for managing public goods funding and protocol upgrades, placing it among related tokens like other layer-2 solutions.

Optimism operates as a layer-2 network that relies on the Ethereum blockchain for its security and finality. It uses a technology called optimistic rollups to process transactions in batches off of the main Ethereum chain. This approach allows the network to achieve higher throughput and lower fees for its users.

The network's key participants include sequencers, who are responsible for ordering and executing transactions. These sequencers bundle transactions and post a summary to the Ethereum mainnet, assuming all are valid. Verifiers can monitor these submissions and challenge any they believe to be incorrect through a process called fraud proving.

A user's transaction is first submitted to the sequencer on the Optimism network for immediate confirmation. The sequencer then compresses many transactions into a single batch and submits it to the Ethereum blockchain. After submission, there is a challenge window where the transaction batch can be disputed if fraudulent activity is detected.

The tokenomics of Optimism (OP) are defined by a fixed supply model. The total maximum supply of OP is capped at 4,294,967,296 tokens, meaning no new tokens can be created beyond this limit. As of current data, the circulating supply is 2,159,485,520 OP, which represents a portion of the total amount available. The remaining tokens are subject to a distribution schedule designed to support the ecosystem through grants, airdrops, and funding for public goods. This fixed supply model contrasts with inflationary assets, as the total number of OP tokens is predetermined. The distribution is managed by the Optimism Foundation to foster long-term growth and participation.
