What is Ethereum Name Service?

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a decentralized naming system built on the Ethereum blockchain, designed to map human-readable names like 'name.eth' to machine-readable identifiers such as cryptocurrency addresses. The project's governance token, ENS, was launched in 2021, with development led by founder Nick Johnson. As an ERC-20 token, it relies on the Ethereum network's consensus mechanism for security and transaction validation. The primary function of the ENS token is to empower community governance over the protocol's treasury and key parameters. It allows token holders to participate in the decision-making process of the ENS decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), shaping its future development.

How does Ethereum Name Service work?

As an ERC-20 token, Ethereum Name Service operates on the Ethereum blockchain, which uses a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. This system requires participants, known as validators, to stake ETH to secure the network. Validators are then responsible for processing transactions and creating new blocks in a way that maintains the chain's integrity.

The network's participants are primarily validators who have locked up a significant amount of ETH as collateral. These validators are algorithmically selected to propose and attest to new blocks of transactions. This staking process incentivizes honest behavior, as validators earn rewards for contributing to the network's security and risk losing their stake for malicious activity.

When a user initiates an ENS token transaction, it is broadcast to the Ethereum network for processing. Validators then include this transaction in a new block that they propose to the chain. Once the block is validated by other participants and added to the blockchain, the transaction is confirmed and becomes permanent.
