What is Chainlink?

Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network designed to connect smart contracts with external, real-world data sources and systems. The project was launched in 2017 and was co-founded by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis. Its primary function is to solve the 'oracle problem,' which is the inability of smart contracts to access off-chain information independently and reliably. By providing secure data feeds, Chainlink enables smart contracts to execute based on inputs and outputs from the traditional world. The network operates as a critical piece of infrastructure for many applications within the decentralized finance ecosystem and beyond.

How does Chainlink work?

Chainlink functions by using a decentralized network of nodes to fetch and verify data from external sources. When a smart contract requires information, it submits a request to the Chainlink network. This system avoids relying on a single source, which enhances the reliability and tamper-resistance of the data provided.

The network is composed of independent node operators who are responsible for retrieving the requested data. These operators are incentivized with LINK tokens to provide accurate and timely information. The reputation and past performance of these nodes are recorded, creating a system where reliability is rewarded.

Once a request is made, multiple nodes retrieve the data, and their findings are aggregated to form a single, validated answer. This aggregated result is then delivered back to the requesting smart contract. This process allows the smart contract to execute its functions based on verified real-world data.

The LINK token is integral to the network's operation, as it is used to compensate node operators for providing data retrieval and validation services.
