Wat is Polygon?

Polygon (POL) is the native ecosystem token for the Polygon network, introduced as the successor to the MATIC token. Hoe werkt Polygon?

The Polygon network operates using a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism to validate transactions and create new blocks. In this system, participants known as validators lock up, or stake, their POL tokens as collateral to earn the right to participate. This staking process secures the network by ensuring that validators have a financial incentive to act honestly and maintain network integrity.

Network participants primarily consist of validators and delegators who contribute to its security and operation. Validators are responsible for running nodes, proposing new blocks, and confirming transactions on the blockchain. Delegators are POL holders who can assign their tokens to a chosen validator, allowing them to contribute to security without running a full node themselves.

When a transaction is submitted, it is broadcast across the network and included in a block by a selected validator. That validator then proposes the block to the rest of the network for verification. Once other validators confirm the block's legitimacy, it is officially added to the Polygon blockchain, finalizing the transaction permanently.

The tokenomics of Polygon (POL) are defined by its supply mechanics and its role within the Proof-of-Stake system. The current circulating supply consists of more than 10.6 billion POL tokens. The protocol does not have a specified maximum supply, which means the total number of tokens can increase over time through a process known as issuance. New POL tokens are created and distributed as rewards to validators and their delegators for securing the network. This inflationary model is designed to provide a continuous incentive for network participation, ensuring that there are always rewards available for those who help maintain the blockchain's security and operational integrity.
