Wat is Avalanche?

Avalanche is a layer-1 blockchain platform designed for building scalable decentralized applications and custom blockchain networks. Launched in 2020, the project was created by founders Emin Gun Sirer, Kevin Sekniqi, and Maofan Ted Yin of Ava Labs. The network operates using a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism, where validators secure the network by staking AVAX tokens. Its architecture is structured to support a high volume of transactions and facilitate the development of complex smart contracts and decentralized finance applications. Avalanche is recognized as a smart contract platform that enables the creation of interoperable, custom blockchains known as subnets, expanding its utility.

Avalanche utilizes a unique Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism to secure its network and validate transactions. Unlike some other PoS systems, it uses repeated sub-sampled voting to quickly achieve consensus on transactions. This approach allows for high throughput and fast finality without compromising on decentralization or security.

The network is maintained by a global set of participants known as validators who are required to stake AVAX. These validators are responsible for processing transactions and adding new blocks to the blockchain. By staking their tokens, they contribute to the network's security and are rewarded for their participation in the consensus process.

When a user submits a transaction, it is broadcast to the network of validators for processing. Validators then engage in a protocol to determine the transaction's validity through a probabilistic process. Once a sufficient level of confidence is reached among validators, the transaction is finalized and permanently recorded on the chain.

The native token of the Avalanche network is AVAX, which has a capped maximum supply of 715,748,719 tokens. This fixed supply means that no more AVAX can be created beyond this limit, introducing a level of scarcity to the asset's economic model. The circulating supply, which is the number of tokens available to the public, currently stands at over 431 million. AVAX serves several key functions within the ecosystem, including the payment of transaction fees, securing the network through staking in its Proof-of-Stake consensus system, and acting as a unit of account across its various subnets. A portion of transaction fees are burned, which removes tokens from circulation over time.
