Solana is a high-performance blockchain designed to support smart contracts and decentralized applications. The project was launched in 2020 and was co-founded by Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal. Wie funktioniert Solana?

Solana's operation is centered on its hybrid consensus mechanism, which combines Proof-of-History (PoH) with Proof-of-Stake (PoS). PoH is not a consensus mechanism itself but a way to create a verifiable, chronological record of events on the blockchain. This timestamping system allows nodes to agree on the sequence of transactions without having to communicate back and forth extensively.

The network is secured by participants known as validators, who are responsible for processing transactions and producing new blocks. Validators are selected to write new transactions to the ledger based on the amount of SOL they have staked as collateral. This PoS system incentivizes validators to act honestly, as malicious behavior could result in the loss of their staked tokens.

When a user submits a transaction, it is sent to network leaders who sequence them using the PoH timestamping method. These sequenced transactions are then executed by validators and confirmed across the network. This architecture allows for the parallel processing of transactions, which contributes to the blockchain's overall capacity and settlement speed.

The tokenomics of Solana's native asset, SOL, are defined by an inflationary model, as there is no maximum supply cap. The current circulating supply stands at over 580 million SOL. New tokens are introduced into the ecosystem through issuance, which serves as rewards for validators who secure the network via its Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. This issuance rate is predetermined by the protocol and is designed to decrease over time. The SOL token has several functions within the network, including covering transaction fees, being used for staking to support network operations, and participating in governance.
