Celo is a mobile-first, Layer-1 blockchain platform designed to increase the adoption of cryptocurrency among smartphone users. The project was launched in 2020 by its founders Rene Reinsberg, Marek Olszewski, and Sep Kamvar. The network operates using a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism, where validators secure the network by staking the native CELO token. Its primary focus is on payments and financial inclusion, aiming to make digital assets and financial tools accessible to a global audience. Wie funktioniert Celo?

Celo operates on a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, a system that secures the network through economic incentives. Validators are selected to create and verify new blocks of transactions based on the amount of CELO they have staked as collateral. This method is designed to be more energy-efficient compared to other consensus models and supports fast transaction finality.

The network is maintained by a distributed group of participants, primarily validators and token holders. Validators run the software that maintains the blockchain's integrity, processes transactions, and adds new blocks. CELO holders can participate indirectly by delegating their tokens to a chosen validator, contributing to network security and earning a portion of the rewards.

When a user initiates a transaction, it is broadcast across the Celo network for validation. Validators then bundle a set of pending transactions into a block and propose it to the network for confirmation. Once other validators agree on the block's validity, it is permanently added to the blockchain, and the transaction is considered complete.

The tokenomics of Celo are defined by a fixed maximum supply and a circulating supply that changes over time. The total number of CELO tokens that can ever be created is capped at 1 billion. This fixed supply means the asset is designed to be deflationary over the long term as adoption grows, assuming demand outpaces the rate of new token issuance. The current circulating supply is 602,211,072 CELO, representing the amount of tokens publicly available. New tokens are introduced into circulation as rewards for validators who secure the network through the Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. This reward system incentivizes participation and helps maintain the network's security and operation.
