Was ist Stellar?

Stellar is the native asset of the Stellar network, a decentralized protocol designed for fast and low-cost value transfers across borders. The network was launched in 2014 by its founders, Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim. It operates using the Stellar Consensus Protocol, a unique consensus mechanism that does not rely on mining. The primary purpose of the network is to connect financial systems and provide a platform for low-cost financial services, including payments and asset issuance. As a Layer-1 payment network, Stellar facilitates the creation and exchange of digital representations of various forms of value, such as different currencies.

Wie funktioniert Stellar?

The Stellar network operates on the Stellar Consensus Protocol, or SCP, which is a distinct form of reaching agreement on transactions. Unlike systems that require mining, SCP relies on a set of trusted nodes to validate transactions through a voting process. This design enables the network to confirm transactions and reach finality within a few seconds.

Participants in the network run software called Stellar Core, which connects them to their peers and allows them to take part in consensus. These nodes are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the distributed ledger by communicating and agreeing on transaction sets. Anyone can operate a node, which contributes to the overall decentralization and security of the platform.

When a transaction is submitted, it is broadcast across the network to participating nodes for verification. The nodes then engage in the SCP process to agree on the transaction's validity and its order in the ledger. Once consensus is achieved, the transaction is permanently recorded, and the settlement is considered final.

The tokenomics of Stellar (XLM) are defined by a fixed supply model. The maximum supply is capped at 50,001,806,812 XLM, ensuring that no additional tokens can be created beyond this limit. As of recent data, the circulating supply is approximately 33.8 billion XLM, which represents the portion of the total supply that is actively available on the market. Initially, the protocol included a small, fixed inflation mechanism, but this feature was removed in 2019 following a community vote. A portion of the total supply is managed by the Stellar Development Foundation to fund ecosystem development, operational costs, and promotional activities to encourage adoption of the network.
